“The Magical Garden” exhibition at the New York-based gallery Lichtundfire explores the idea of a garden as a manifestation of a harmonious relationship between nature and humanity. As part of the show, the established contemporary abstract artist Vian Borchert presents four new pieces dedicated to the magnifying beauty of blooming cherry trees. The show is on view at Lichtundfire through April 27, 2024.

At the center of “The Magical Garden” is the belief that by living in close harmony with nature, humans can reconnect with their long-lost sense of innocence and child-like wonder. Vian Borchert’s sensibility fits in perfectly with the theme of the exhibition. The artist has been surrounded by nature her entire life. She spent her childhood years playing in her family’s gardens and carried her love for the natural world into adulthood when she moved to the Washington, D.C., area. In Vian’s new abstract floral series, the artist revisits the awe she felt when she saw the cherry blossoms bloom and painted them for the very first time in 2015.

Cherry blossom season has been a beloved subject for many artists for centuries. Nevertheless, Vian Borchert still manages to put her spin on the tradition, opting for a more abstract aesthetic that captures the fleeting feeling rather than what causes it. In a colorful storm of pink, blue, and green, one can barely pick out the exact outlines of cherry trees or the surrounding environment. This helps create a dream-like, ephemeral atmosphere that has long been a characteristic feature of Vian’s signature style.

About Vian Borchert

Vian Borchert is an incredibly prolific abstract artist whose work can be seen in various institutions across the US and the world. For example, she recently showed her painting, “Into the Blues,” at the “Exodus to Inland” exhibition at the Medinaceli DeArte Museum in Spain. Among fans and fellow artists, Vian is widely recognized for her signature abstract blue skyscapes. Her paintings and mixed-media works can transport the viewer into a completely different place, be it a sunlit beach, a gloomy city, or a fragrant garden. Instead of directly representing reality, the artist captures shapes, outlines, and colors to evoke complex emotions.
