Eterna is a Swiss, luxury watch group with a long standing history. It is a brand that is one of those rare treasures you happen to stumble upon and come to admire. They aren’t extremely popular in North America, yet. The brand was founded by Dr. Josef Girard and Urs Schild in Grenchen which is in the Canton of Solothrun (Switzerland) back in 1856. Their specialty was creating pocket watches with alarms. As times changed and the demand for wristwatches grew they were the first to create an alarm wristwatch in 1908.
Eterna has always been an innovative and inventive brand. When wristwatches began to be considered fashionable they created ladies wristwatches by adapting small pocket watches. In 1932 Eterna set up a second, sub-brand called ETA. ETA created movements for Eterna and other Swiss watch brands. ETA remains the most popular and widely used brand for watch movements. Eterna has proven that they are the leading watch brand in innovation time and time again. Some of their accomplishments include creating the smallest production wristwatch with a Baguette movement, an eight day alarm watch, and an automatic watch all in the 1930’s. When their most famous wristwatch, the Eterna-matic was launched in 1948 their popularity grew. The design of the watch wasn’t unlike anything the public had seen. It was what was inside the watch that stood out. The automatic winding design was Eterna’s greatest design and one of their greatest accomplishments. The rotor ran on five small bearings which made the watch efficient beyond belief for the time.
By the 1980’s Eterna was sold several times. It’s most recent owners include Porsche Design and International Volant Ltd. The new owners have stayed true to Dr. Josef Girard and Urs Schild’s vision of innovation, superb craftsmanship, and aesthetic appeal. The current watch models have a vintage vibe that collectors and individuals alike will fall in love with. If you are looking for a reliable, innovative wristwatch with classic and elegant styling, look no further than Eterna.
