Watergate Gallery, an art gallery located in the iconic Watergate building complex in Washington, DC, opened a new exhibition, titled The American Mosaic, on June 27, 2026, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. This group exhibition brings together eight artists with a strong connection to the gallery, whose unique visual approaches reflect the idea of unity in diversity — a defining characteristic of the American identity since the country’s foundation.

The American Mosaic: Featured Artists

The United States was shaped by diverse and multicultural origins, with communities arriving from different parts of the world and contributing to the country’s evolving cultural landscape. This rich combination of backgrounds is what makes the American identity so vibrant today. Through The American Mosaic, curators at Watergate Gallery highlight eight artists whose practices represent different perspectives on this shared cultural experience.

J. Ford Huffman is a Washington, DC-based artist known for mixed-media assemblage sculptures. Lauri Menditto has gained recognition for her colorful, pop-inspired paintings and commercial illustration work. Philippe Mougne creates artworks at the intersection of abstraction and figuration, while Tisha Balesi Wood, a Franco-American neo-impressionist painter, is celebrated for her expressive palette-knife techniques in oil and acrylic.

Among other featured artists is Vian Borchert, with eight of her signature blue paintings included in the show. A selection of small and medium-sized blue seascapes displayed at Watergate Gallery reflects Borchert’s deep connection to the sea and her Mediterranean heritage.

These expressive compositions evoke a sense of nostalgia while inspiring viewers to imagine a more harmonious future. Expansive landscapes, drifting clouds, and open skies merge with the rhythmic movement of ocean waves, creating immersive visual experiences. The combination of lyrical color, energetic brushwork, and emotional depth forms the recognizable visual poetry that has become a defining feature of Borchert’s artistic language.

Beyond Watergate Gallery: Borchert’s Summer and Fall 2026 Program

In addition to her participation in The American Mosaic, Vian Borchert recently presented her solo exhibition Acts of Translation at Occo Gallery in Madrid. Her artwork will also appear this October at the Venice Biennale’s accompanying events, including the Social Justice exhibition at Kunst Depot Venezia.

Another major highlight of Borchert’s 2026 schedule is her participation in the International Paris Vernissage at the prestigious Carrousel du Louvre, located in the Louvre Museum. The event is scheduled for October 23–25, 2026, offering European audiences another opportunity to experience the artist’s distinctive abstract expressionist works.
