Black History Month is a US-wide celebration held every February to revisit and commemorate the contribution of Black Americans to the history and present of the United States. The footprint of African Americans is immense. It spans across politics, economics, social life, and art. Thus, all art entities, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA), hold a series of Black History Month events to shed light on the uniqueness of Black identity and experience representation in art.

Schedule of Black History Month Events at the PMA

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is deeply dedicated to the celebration of heritage and art contributions of diverse cultural groups. In line with its Equity Agenda and the Heritage Month Series commemorating the input of all cultural and ethnic groups of Philadelphia, the Museum has organized interesting programming for Black History Month.

The starting point of Black History Month festivities at the PMA is the Family Festival held on February 2. This art gathering will allow the visitors to view a variety of art activities, interact with Akria Gordon during an artist takeover, and enjoy a festive dance party with DJ Jamz and Poetic Selections. Besides, the start of Black History Month coincides with the final days of The Time Is Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure, a themed display of 28 Black and African diasporic contemporary artists. Thus, all attendees of the Family Festival will be able to attend the exhibition and embrace a variety of contemporary interpretations of Black identity.

Other PMA events worth visiting include the Friday Night Celebration scheduled for February 7. Its visitors will be able to perform joint art-making activities with Yannick Lowery, an established Black artist who acts as the PMA’s collaborator. The event will also feature delicious food treats from Darnel’s Cakes and Stir restaurant and live music by DJ Killsing.
