Cuervo y Sobrinos is a unique company in that their style always has a distinctly Cuban style. The brand originally belonged to one of the greatest watchmakers in Cuban history, and though it is now a Swiss company, it still retains its old spirit. Their newest watch, the Historiador Chronograph, continues this tradition.

 The watch comes in two different color combinations. One has a white dial and a brown alligator leather strap, while the other is black with black alligator leather. The look is inspired by the styles that were popular in the 50’s. Both dial colors have a red tachymeter scale around the outside of the face, which is especially noticeable on the white dial version. The chapter ring, and especially the font of the numbers in it, has a very classic look. The Arabic numerals that mark the hours are in a different font, but it also has a very classic flavor.

 There are three sub-dials for the chronograph, one for seconds at three o’clock, which has what looks like a coat of arms etched into it one for half-hours at nine o’clock, and a twelve-hour counter at six o’clock. The hands are pomme-styled and contrast excellently with the matte black dial. On the white one, they look excellent, but are don’t stand out as strongly. The second hand has a huge skeletonized triangle on the tip of it. When it passes over one of the large numbers that mark the hours, or over the date aperture at the twelve o’clock position, it frames it nicely. On the version with the white dial, this hand is the same color as the others, but on the black version, the second hand is the same brilliant red as the tachymeter.

 The stainless steel case is 41 millimeters and round, like an old pocket watch, but the thick lugs make the shape seem a little less circular. The rounded bezel also seems to be vintage-inspired. There are two push buttons, at two and four o’clock, to operate the chronograph. The crown is slightly flattened and has grooves on the side to make it easier to grip.

 The movement inside is basically a Dubois-Depraz 2025. It’s an automatic movement with (obviously) a chronograph function, and it has a power reserve of about 40 hours. It is visible through a sapphire crystal on the back of the watch. The rotor has the Cuervo y Sobrinos logo emblazoned on it, which gives it a nice touch, and further brings together the essence of the company’s timepieces. This is a Cuban watch with Swiss-made machinery inside, and it’s that distinct flavor that makes Cuervo y Sobrinos an interesting brand to keep up with.
