High Performance Watches by Ermenegildo Zegna
Zegna’s other new watch is the High Performance Sea Diver. This one is also good looking, though in a lot of ways it’s just like any other diving watch. They all share similar features, which is natural since divers all need similar things in a watch.
Unsurprisingly, the steel case of the High Performance Sea Diver is extra thick. What is a little bit unusual is that its back is secured with hex screws. This watch is also 42 millimeters wide, one of many features the Sea Diver shares with the High Performance Chronograph. The rotating bezel has a scaled black insert. The crown has “EZ” on it, to represent Ermenegildo Zegna.
Like the High Performance Chronograph, all of the attention in the design of this watch seems to have gone to the dial. Once again we see the large white Arabic numerals and white bars. Once again, they are outlined in scarlet. On this watch, the only hours displayed in numerals are three o’clock, six o’clock, nine o’clock, and twelve o’clock. The watch doesn’t have subdials, just a window that shows the date. This gives it a much simpler look than its Chronograph counterpart, not that the other looked crowded or overly complicated. Etched in the same scarlet as the outline of the numerals, just under the hands, are the two lines “High Performance 300 M/ 1000 FT”. The name of Ermenegildo Zegna and of the line (High Performance) is engraved on the dial, the caseback, and the rotor.
The hour and minute hands are also snakehead shaped and sword shaped, respectively. The red of the second hand really stands out against the black dial. It is tipped with a longish white snakehead. The dial itself is made of textured ceramic in a matte black color, which lends a subtle touch of ruggedness to the watch. It comes with a black rubber strap.
As far as the movement goes, it is as yet unclear as to what is inside the watch. Zegna has stated that all of the High Performance watches are going to have ETA movements, but it isn’t clear whether they will all have the same ETA movement. This watch might have an ETA 2894, like the High Performance Chronograph, or it might have 2892 or even another ETA movement. There’s probably nothing to fear here. ETA makes reliable and high-quality movements, so you can count on them to make something good in this case as well.
While these two timepieces are highly wearable, they may not be so highly affordable to most people. Some watch enthusiasts may shy away from buying a watch sold under the same brand as clothing and will stick to buying watches from watchmakers. Some fans of Zegna’s clothing will not be interested in buying an expensive sports watch. It’s unclear if the company even makes watches for the purpose of profiting directly from them. Most clothing companies who go into making watches don’t earn much revenue from watch sales. Maybe it’s to boost their prestige, or maybe they just like watches. Whatever the case, they have made nice-looking watches in this series.
