Merry Christmas! The Time to Explore Christmas in Art
Christmas is a deeply cherished holiday for millions of people around the world, and its meaning has always been symbolic and profound. That’s why this festivity has found so many reflections in world-famous works of art. Starting from the early 14th century, artists have tackled this subject and offered their own visual interpretations of the sacred event of Savior’s birth. The earliest known works include Giotto di Bondone’s Nativity, a fresco in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, and Nativity and Adoration of Shepherds by Domenico Ghirlandaio, a fresco in the Sassetti Chapel in Florence.
Yet, not all images are religious in style; one can find other Christmas-inspired works among European artists’ legacy, approaching the event from a different angle. For instance, the Northern Renaissance painter Rogier van der Weyden created Nativity – Bladelin Altarpiece in the 1450s, where Mary and Joseph are kneeling in front of Jesus Christ. The painting is distinguished by the authentic Flemish architecture and painting style.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s The Census at Bethlehem (1566) is another depiction of Christmas, created in the signature winter landscape style of the artist, featuring a scene following Jesus Christ’s birth. Here, the viewers can see the Virgin Mary and the newborn Savior on the donkey, with Joseph walking next to them. These and many other paintings form the rich artistic heritage related to Christmas and its interpretations across art schools and historical periods.
