Summer is setting in on the African continent, while the Northern part of the world spends snowy days getting ready for the Christmas holidays. In Cape Town, the start of December means the beginning of a summer season, filled with higher tourist inflows and lots of activities in the local art market. Nel Gallery steps into the season with an opening of its annual Summer Salon, offering new names, exciting discoveries, and lucrative art deals.

The Unique Format of the Summer Salon at Nel Gallery

This year, the Summer Salon at Nel Gallery is held from December 4, 2025, through January 31, 2026. The salon format presupposes that the gallery’s walls are packed with an eclectic artwork selection, curated by the gallery’s owners. The exhibition is dynamic, with new art objects added to it now and then to give repeat visitors the freshness of experiences. All art objects are available for immediate purchase, so it’s a great chance to choose an artwork that speaks to you and get hold of it right away.

Highlights of the Exhibition

Nel Gallery is deeply committed to favoring local talent, so visitors and art collectors can always choose from a wide range of works by South African artists. This season, the highlights of the salon include many talented artists, including Adilson De Oliveira, Andrew Munnik, Riaan Coetzee, and Susan Proctor, among others.

Adilson De Oliveira is a self-taught, interdisciplinary artist and animator from Johannesburg. At this year’s edition of the Summer Salon, he presents a 2025 work titled “Pissing into an Ocean Filled with Piss,” a three-dimensional installation elevating the urinal as an art object in the best tradition of Marcel Duchamp.

Another interesting artwork on display is Andrew Munnik’s “A Drop in the Ocean,” created in 2014. Munnik is an established South African post-war artist exploring the power and social issues through art.

The work of Susan Proctor also enjoys demand and popularity in the South African art market. A contemporary artist and interior designer with a unique approach, Proctor has her 2025 mixed-media collage “Bonsai” on display.
