The university was established in 1957 as a college for secondary school teachers of mathematics and science in Oyster Bay, NY. Leonard K. Olson was appointed the first dean of the State University College on Long Island as it was called back then. Several years later, in 1962, the institution relocated to its new campus near the village of Stony Brook and got its new name of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, or simply Stony Brook University.
These days, Stony Brook University is one of the most significant centers of learning and scholarship in the United States.
