Art created in traditional media is usually confined to the place of its physical display in terms of outreach and visibility. However, due to the efforts of Culturally Arts Collective, thousands of art objects have become accessible on a global scale, without geographical limitations and the need to travel across long distances. The organization partners with artists in various parts of the world to digitize their works and display them in a virtual gallery. This time, Culturally Arts Collective has presented “Liminal Portrayal,” a solo exhibition by Sampy Sicada.

Meet Sampy Sicada

Sampy Sicada is a contemporary artist of British and Hong Kong origin working in the area of surrealism and photorealism. Based in Savannah, Georgia, he creates unique art objects using the traditional techniques of graphite, colored pencils, and charcoal. The artist denies narrow classifications of his creative approach and associates his work with an ongoing effort to link art with the intricacies and continuity of human experience. His emotionally striking and thought-provoking portraits unlock the symbolic depth of authentic creativity.

Emotional Depth and Symbolism of “Liminal Portrayal”

“Liminal Portrayal” is a series of works by Sampy Sicada that expand the boundaries of traditional art and offer a unique glimpse of psychologically resonating, liminal states of transition and change. As an artist striving for emotionally evoking storytelling, Sicada combines psychological themes, media theory, and the fundamentals of the politics of representation to create compelling images.

Sampy Sicada’s works are exceptionally resonant in the present-day cultural age, which is characterized as a fractured space isolating people from fellow humans and themselves. In this context, the introspection and connection characterizing Sicada’s art become a breath of fresh air in the tech-dominated era of discontinuity. The artist’s creative process is also technically original, with multiple stages of digital compositing, planning, and rendering coming into intricate interplay with traditional drawing techniques to give shape to Sicada’s creativity and imagination on canvas.

“Liminal Portrayal” is available for viewing at the Milostka Center for Exhibitions until September 1, 2025.
