Many of us were fascinated by Greek and Egyptian mythology when we were children: both cultures have rich histories stretching from ancient times to the present. Abir Saleh’s work represents those familiar mythological and cultural motifs but in a personal and unique way.
Saleh heavily draws on her experience growing up as a person of Greek-Jordanian descent. Many of her paintings depict mythological deities: for example, one of her pieces is named after the Egyptian sky goddess Athor.
Eyes of different shapes and colors appear to be some of the key motifs in the artist’s work. Many ancient cultures believed that eye-shaped amulets had protective powers, including the Greeks and the ancient Egyptians. Besides, depictions of eyes evoke various emotions in the audience, from the unsettling sensation of being watched to the comforting feeling of connecting with another human being by meeting their gaze.
Abir Saleh’s work fits under the umbrella of experimental art, as the artist never stays within one medium or genre. She is always looking for ways to strike the imagination of the viewers, and she does that by many different means. Saleh often combines oil, ink, and acrylic paint, creating colorful and textured paintings that are exciting to look at. Throughout her artistic career, Abir Saleh has shown her experimental art at a number of venues in Greece, including her first solo exhibition in Melina Mercouri Hall on the island of Hydra.
