The Amazing “Chroma V” by Yunchul Kim at the Venice Biennale 2022
Last year, the Venice Biennale introduced the audience to many breathtaking and thought-provoking pieces of art. All of them were unique in their own way, from the mediums and materials they were made from to the ideas that they represented. Among the most memorable art pieces were artworks created by the South Korean award-winning artist and composer Yunchul Kim. His solo exhibition Gyre was showcased at the Korean Pavilion and included five installations the artist worked on over a couple of years. One of them, the monumental piece titled Chroma V (2022), is an encapsulation of Kim’s multifaceted background, as well as his approach to art and life in general.
Yunchul Kim and his unique vision
Yunchul Kim is not only a visual artist but also a composer of electronic music and an admirer of poetry. The artist does not limit himself to one artistic medium: he masterfully integrates text, science, sound, and physics into his work.
Chroma V could be considered the centerpiece of the exhibition. It was displayed in the middle of the art hall and functioned as a receiver and a connecting link between other installations. Chroma V represents a kinetic artwork composed of around 400 individual pieces that move and change color. It also receives signals from other installations that are part of the exhibit and responds to them by changing the position of its moving elements. All of the five installations are supposed to be perceived together, similarly to the way the human organism consists of interconnected body parts.
Chroma V is a monumental piece reminiscent in its shape of a snake eating its tale. The serpentine imagery evokes mythological interpretations while simultaneously drawing parallels between the worlds of nature and technology. The artist’s transdisciplinary approach to art allows him to create artwork that is complex and multi-dimensional in both meaning and make-up. In his work, Yunchul Kim strives to deconstruct what we know as ‘reality’ and invites us to take a look into a futuristic world of ‘fantasy.’
Yunchul Kim’s ever-evolving artistic vision makes him one of the most anticipated artists of our time. He has shown his work at galleries all over the globe, including Europe, Asia, and the US. He is also a founder of Studio Locus Solus in Seoul, South Korea, and a prominent member of several research groups.
